All of a Sudden We’re Grown Ups :: by Carolina

One of my favorite people ever, Carolina, wrote this and posted it on her blog this last week.

As I prepare to turn 25 (and officially enter my mid-twenties), I identify. So much.

No longer the ten year old girls who shyly greeted each other across the hall; or teenagers lost in an array of games, cheers, popularity and heartache. Not even the young adults living away from home for the first time, soaking in the knowledge and ignorance only college can provide; that’s not who we are now.  No longer girls, we are women; all of a sudden we’re grown ups.

Crushes have come and gone, some  have become boyfriends. The brave ones stuck around and became fiancees, smiled at us down the isle as we wore white. We’ve bought our own house, remodeled and gutted it, made a house a home. Months have become years, years formed new life within us. Our hips ushered motherhood, our instincts awoke areas we didn’t know we had; we began to recognize ourselves as reflections of our mothers.

Arguments turned into fights that separation followed; divorce is on the verge of showing it’s ugly face. Our hearts, our past,  are full of  baggage,  heavy to lift and filled to the brim with laughter, fears and memories adrift. Not all has been bad, some has been epic. The tears of our years have brought with them many smiles.

And miles. We’ve spent much time apart, a lifetime it seems.Years of breaking and rebuilding, hearing the pain through telephone voices,  occasionally seeing its reflection in each others’ eyes. We’ve grown, everybody changed. Yet we have always managed to pick up right where we left off, as if it were yesterday. We still sing and dance and hold hands : through life,  through death, even through discoveries of far away lands.

The little girls who once played in each others’ yards are now real strong women. We may be far away but we’re never apart. You all have a piece of my heart. I love you all.
